A re-issue of the ‘9 flags’ sweater worn by Margaret Thatcher in 1975, released to coincide with the EU referendum on 23 June 2016. Produced in collaboration with Emma Shore, under the name Common Market.
We thought that the debate at that time was failing to communicate the positive reasons to remain a part of Europe, and that the imagery and slogans from 1975 – ‘Support your local continent’ – did a better job. Also, we liked the conflict of it appealing to both anti-EU Thatcherites and left wing remainers, for different reasons.
The lookbook images were shot in front of various EU countries’ London embassies. Released in the week prior to the vote, the jumper quickly went viral around the world. We were featured on BBC One, The Guardian, The Telegraph, The Financial Times, Dazed & Confused, Liberation, El Mundo and Sveriges TV amongst many others.
